Tunisia: Challenges, opportunities and strategies to strengthen the country recovery
Mattia Toaldo, Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR
Being the only country to have reacted to the Arab awakening, even if with difficulty, through a transitions less tumultuous, Tunisia today embodies the thorn in the eye of the Islamist front and therefore a special target for destabilization attempts. This circumstance opens therefore two crucial fronts: 1) security; 2) the reduction of the harmful effects that the threat of new attacks has on an economy already in trouble. Unemployment and the lack of prospects for young people, fight against corruption, adaptation of legislation to the provisions of the 2014 Constitution, personal freedoms - particularly the freedom of expression -, transitional justice, are some of the challenges that the Tunisian administration has to face.
The event was meant to advance a series of proposals and recommendations to revitalize and strengthen the reform process in the country, the development and socio-economic prosperity in order to ensure stability through a holistic approach that replaces the short-sighted policy put in place in recent years based only on security.
