Mattia is a policy fellow for ECFR's Middle East & North Africa programme where he focuses on Libya, Israel/Palestine and migration issues. His op-eds have been published by The New York Times, Foreign Policy, El Pais, El Mundo, The Hill, Middle East Eye, L’Espresso, Il Fatto Quotidiano, Deutsche Welle, East, Politica Exterior. He has been interviewed or quoted also by Al Jazeera, The Economist, Reuters, BBC World, Sky News, Rainews 24, France 24, Radio France Inter, France Culture, L’Express.

Mattia is a member of the Council of the Society for Libyan Studies and of the scientific board of Limes, the Italian review of Geopolitics.

Mattia has been at ECFR since 2013. From 2011-2013, he was a stipendiary fellow at the Institute for the Americas in London and a postdoctoral fellow for the British School in Rome and the Society for Libyan Studies, where his work focused on Western reactions to the Arab uprisings. Mattia has researched and written on the Middle East Peace Process and on Libya since 2004. In 2013, he published a biography of Benjamin Netanyahu for  Limes. Since 2003, he has worked as a consultant both on foreign policy and domestic issues for several Italian policymakers.

Mattia earned his Ph.D. in History of International Relations at Roma Tre University in 2008, and in 2012, Routledge published his book, “The Origins of the US War on Terror”.
