Libya: Six months after the political agreement

The Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) was signed in Skhirat, Morocco, on 17 December. It established a Presidency Council and a unity government that have been sitting in the capital Tripoli for three months now. The support of the international community, and of Great Britain in particular, has been paramount to achieving that result. Six months on, some important results have been achieved, notably with the shrinking of the area under IS control. Yet, the unity government and its supporters in the international community face daunting challenges. How can Europe support the UN-brokered Libyan political agreement and help stabilise Libya? 

Peter Millet (@petermillet1) is HM Ambassador to Libya where he is one of the key protagonists of international negotiations and political efforts in support of the new Libyan government. Previously he was British Ambassador to Jordan from 2011 – 2015 and High Commissioner to Cyprus from 2005 – 2010.
