High Judicial Council (HJC)
The currently suspended High Judicial Council (HJC) represents the Palestinian judicial authority. It nominates judges for approval by the president of the PA and supervises the judiciary system, including overseeing the affairs of all judges. The HJC was created through Article (1) of the 2002 Judicial Authority Act. The President of the HJC is appointed by the Council itself.
In July 2019, President Mahmoud Abbas dissolved the High Judicial Council (HJC), claiming it had failed to halt the deterioration of the judiciary, and replacing it with a Transitional High Judicial Council for one year.
