About ECFR Madrid Office
The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) is a pan-European think-tank, launched in October 2007, with offices in Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Warsaw and Sofia. Its objective is to conduct research, promote informed debate across Europe on the development of coherent and effective European values-based foreign policy, and revitalize the European project as a whole, bridging the gap between different perspectives and national differences. An objective that is especially important in times of populism, Europhobia, isolationism and conflicts beyond our borders. It operates through a Council composed of over two hundred European personalities, several research programs and national offices.
ECFR carries out a dynamic advocacy work through reports, presence in the media, social networks and public opinion, as well as private diplomacy, creating an informed and critical discussion platform. A pan-European strategic community, with priorities such as the refugee crisis, the Middle East peace process, Eastern Europe and Russia, or what role for Europe in Asia.
The ECFR office in Madrid was launched in September 2007, under the leadership of José Ignacio Torreblanca, as a research project inside FRIDE, a leading think tank in Spain chaired by Diego Hidalgo, philanthropist and co-founder of ECFR. The founding objectives of ECFR Madrid are to disseminate the democratic values of peace, development, solidarity and human rights enshrined in the EU Treaty. The team of ECFR Madrid, has advocated for a pan-European approach for the Spanish foreign policy, seeking to make ECFR a platform for the debate of new ideas about that new Spanish foreign policy.
ECFR Madrid has a strong presence in media and social networks, organizes quality and very dynamic events, often with other civil society organizations, to discuss aspects of the current challenges of our era such as refugees, changes in North Africa and the Middle East, Ukraine, or the European crisis itself.
Since July 2, 2015, the ECFR Office in Spain has been registered in the National Register of Associations as "European Council of Foreign Relations Association" with number 607963 and its founding members are Diego Hidalgo, Cristina Manzano and José Ignacio Torreblanca.
