More than eight years after the eruption of popular protests against Bashar al-Assad and the subsequent civil war, the government is now consolidating its position over much of Syria. This discussion will consider what recent developments mean for Syrians, both within the country and abroad, and implications for European policy toward the ongoing crisis. Is there still space for a political process led by the new UN special envoy Geir O. Pedersen, is intra-Syrian reconciliation possible and what do recent internal pressures related to the deepening fuel crisis mean for the government’s hold on power, wider Syrian society and the plight of refugees?
