The Future of Israeli-Palestinian Peace: Is there life after Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’?

The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) is delighted to invite you to a private roundtable to discuss what impact the US ‘peace’ plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will have on peacemaking efforts. We will be joined by Tobias Tunkel, head of the Near East division at the German Federal Foreign Office and ECFR Policy Fellow Hugh Lovatt. 

Despite all the fanfare and expectations, President Donald Trump’s ‘Deal of the Century’ remains a distant prospect. Yet the US administration is already reshaping political realities on the ground and in the international arena. At the same time, it is trying to kick start a new track to improve the Palestinian economy. But while the ultimate end goal of such efforts has not yet been defined, American actions appear at odds with a two-state solution. Meanwhile, political developments in Israel and Palestine are further complicating the prospects for meaningful negotiations, even as both sides are moving away from the current two-state process. Against such a bleak backdrop, what comes next? Can European policy respond to current dynamics? Has the EU become a bystander watching from the sidelines, or can it play a more political role to advance peace?
