The European Council on Foreign Relations is delighted to invite you to a lunch discussion on the current political situation in Yemen and the political challenges in southern Yemen specifically. Beyond the historical divisions, the political fragmentation on the ground has sharply increased since 2015, when the war in Yemen first gained an international dimension. Recently separatists have increased their control on the ground, leading to the 5 November 2019 Riyadh Agreement between the internationally recognised government of Yemen (IRG) and a major separatist group, the Southern Transitional Council (STC). However, implementation of the agreement is facing serious difficulties and is sometimes described as having already collapsed, resulting in a renewed military escalation in the conflict.

Recently ECFR visiting fellows Helen Lackner and Raiman Al-Hamdani have published a paper that argued that EU policymakers need to address the diverse, complex problems facing southern Yemen if they are to create a sustainable solution to the conflict. We would like to discuss the current situation of the complex conflict in Yemen with experts Helen Lackner, Michael Ohnmacht and Monder Basalma.
