The European Council on Foreign Relations

Sofia office

ECFR’s Sofia office was established in October 2007 to engage the Bulgarian policy community in discussion about European foreign policy issues and to serve as an observation post for South Eastern Europe and the Caucases.

The office is hosted by the Centre for Liberal Strategies, a prominent Bulgarian think tank, headed by Ivan Krastev. ECFR also works closely with Svetoslav Bojilov, whose Communitas Foundation provides core funding for ECFR.

The Sofia office focuses on research, advocacy and public activities to further ECFR’s mission.

ECFR inaugurated its activities in Bulgaria in November 2007 with a public event attended by Martti Ahtisaari, former Finnish President and ECFR co-chair, Georgi Pirinski, Speaker of the Bulgarian National Assembly, Gergana Grancharova, Minister for European Union Affairs, and Mark Leonard, ECFR’s Executive Director.

ECFR's Bulgarian Council Members include:

Svetoslav Bojilov - Founder, Communitas Foundation and President of Venture Equity Bulgaria Ltd.
Ivan Krastev - Chair of Board, Centre for Liberal Strategies
Nickolay Mladenov - Defence Minister; former Member of the European Parliament
