The Spanish political community is devastated by the loss of an exceptional woman, whose courage and support of European principles and values marked her out. Carme was a curious, kind and passionate politician who focused on improving the lives of real people. She was a tireless advocate of gender equality and opportunities, as well the idea of a peace-oriented Europe.

Carme was a dedicated member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. She joined our Council shortly after her successful term as Spain’s first female defence minister. She played a leading role in areas of European defence and security while part of the ECFR Council, and was a force to be reckoned with in championing the European project. She embodied the very principles of the European Union and will be dearly missed.

The European Council on Foreign Relations does not take collective positions. ECFR publications only represent the views of their individual authors.
